June 2008
Dear Parents,
School is considerably quieter these days as Years 11, 12 and 13 have now finished their Cambridge examinations. As they look forward the Graduation Dinner and their future studies, we are busy finalising arrangements to bring the academic year to a close. There is still much to do over the next three weeks: examination scripts to mark, reports to write, planning ahead for School Prizegiving and the organization of events for activities week.
The Cambridge examinations once again ran smoothly. During the examinations we received a visit from a Senior Cambridge Examinations Inspector, who commended the School on the standard of examination organization. He indicated that BIS was the best examination centre he had visited in Africa, and comparable with any centre in the UK. Our examination candidates acquitted themselves with a good degree of personal organisation and commitment to achieving their best results. I congratulate them heartily for their efforts. Provisional IGCSE and A Level results will be available from 12th August 2008. Students can contact me directly via email. I will also mail a copy to the Registrar’s Office.
The Graduation Dinner will take place tomorrow, Saturday 14th June. A tremendous amount of preparation and planning over the past year has gone into the event, which promises to have all the spectacle and glamour of the Oscars. Tickets have been sold out and an anxious air of excitement and expectation surrounds the event. The event starts at 7.00pm prompt and the gates will be closed at 7.30pm. Entry will not be allowed after this time.
The School Year Book has now returned from the publishers. It provides a colourful and vivid montage of the School year and the events and activities that have taken place. It is an impressive publication which emphasises the many positive achievements of the School and of our students. I wholeheartedly recommend that you purchase a copy for posterity. It is now available in the School Shop for N3, 500. I would like to thank all the members of the Yearbook Committee for their tremendous efforts in yet another successful production of theYearbook
School Prizegiving for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will take place on Friday 27th June 2008. It will take place in New Horizons at 1.00pm prompt. All parents are cordially invited to attend and to support the students and to help them to celebrate their achievements. Please make a note in your diaries. I look forward to seeing you there!
International Day will take place on Thursday 3rd July. This is the day when students come to school wearing national dress. In the spirit of internationalism, parents are asked to provide small items of finger food for the students to have during the course of the day’s activities. These should be brought into the School’s kitchen as early as possible on the day of the event. There will also be an international quiz during the morning; parents are invited to attend to share their ‘international’ knowledge with the students.
Planning is well underway for the final Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award expedition to scale the dizzy heights of Mount Cameroon. The group will leave on Sunday 29th June, returning on Wednesday 2nd July. Ms. Euston-Brown and Mr. Egede will supervise the students during the trip. We wish them luck for a successful expedition, and once again we look forward to seeing the BIS flag on the summit.
We now have planning permission to build a covered shelter and play area at the Motherless Babies’ Home in Lekki. Work is now underway and should be completed by next week. Money for the project has been raised by fundraising activities during the past year.
The next FOBIS meeting will take place in my office at 10.30am on Wednesday 18th June 2008. For the benefit of new parents, FOBIS stands for Friends of BIS, the School’s equivalent of a PTA.
All outstanding accounts for the current year should have been paid into the accounts office by now. If you have any monies outstanding, or if you require any information about you account, please contact Mr. Gbenga Oyewole, the School’s Accountant as quickly as possible. Lack of payment may lead to a student’s references, academic transcripts and examination results being delayed. Please note that the Accounts office will be open for fees and related matters between 8.00am and 2.00pm.
All parents can receive a copy of this newsletter from BIS electronically. If you have not yet subscribed, please contact Mrs. Terry Nicolson, the School’s Registrar, with your email address and she will add you to the circulation list. Conversely, if you wish to unsubscribe, please let us know.
The current academic session will finish at 2.00pm on Thursday 3rd July 2008. Parents’ Day will commence at 9.00am on Friday 4th July 2008, and will finish at 1.00pm.School will resume for the new academic session on Monday 8th September 2008. All returning boarding students should arrive from 2.00pm on Sunday 7th September 2008.If you are moving on for the new academic year, I would like to say thank you for your past support and wish you a very successful onward journey.
